A Conversation with My Brother (the other one)
Musical performance, musical form, Chopin, the Fab Four...
Though my brother Robert is an Anglican rector down in the Research Triangle in North Carolina, as well as a sort of ragged bohemian, he was a musician well before he ever considered ordination. Our conversation here, consequently, is on matters strictly musical. You can see he dressed for the occasion. The exchange took an unexpected turn. We began by discussing aspects of the performer's art and some of his own compositions, then shifted to Chopin (who was supposed to be the principal topic), only to veer off onto an extended discussion of the Beatles. Excuse the unfinished form of the recording, but I can plead illness as an explanation for my laziness. In part, this is a promotional endeavor, meant to encourage readers to consider his Substack publication The Musical Platypus, which combines disquisitions on musicological arcana and ruminations on music of every interesting genre.
That was great to listen to. There's a book here in Ireland "Amhránaíocht Dúchas na nGael" or "Indigenous Gaelic Singing" that goes into the Pentatonic scale and musical notation in Gaelic music and at points compares it to Indian Ragas. This conversation has reminded me to deepen my knowledge of the topic!
Nice to see you via your YouTube page again David. I take this to mean your road to recovery is underway.
