In your brother’s James commentary, I like the way he interprets sin as something like “straying or erring from the path”, as opposed to the traditional phrasing I’ve always heard as “missing the mark”. The former phrase seems more spiritual/theosis-flavored (Orthodox). The latter phrase seems more juridicial-flavored (Evangelical). I don’t know which phrase better hits the mark and stays on the path in terms of translation, but I do know which one helps me more spiritually.

"People who claim theatrically to be Christian like JD Vance, whom I would call the incarnation of Satan, if I didn't want to be unfair to Satan" Yep, that's about the most fitting depiction of Vance I could have conceived.

I do think Satan is working through Vance, and I am appalled that Bishop Robert Barron and Ross Douthat have not been more resistant to him. Forgive me, Lord.

Ross Douthat has been as resistant to Trumpism as a 17th-century sailor was to STDs, but even he has started to realize that Peter Thiel might not be the greatest humanitarian of our time.

Douthat: "Do you consider yourself to be a nameless, cosmic horror?"

Thiel: "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn."

Douthat: "Hmmm, interesting, how can we know for sure?"

I was so happy to see this posted here, as it was the prompt which led me to jump into a subscription right away. (I've subscribed in the past, you know how these things go.)

The reason I wanted to subscribe right away is because on YouTube the comment section is, (probably wisely, given the sheltered intellect of those who struggle rebelliously with the concept of guilt-model "sin") turned off, and I urgently needed to suggest something to you (if it hasn't transpired already -- I shall look through your publication to see whether it has).

And that suggestion is implied in the subject matter implied in this conversation, as well as by another occasion. One Father John Behr of venerable institutional pedigree, as well as (as you so rightfully say) skillful synthesizer of our Fathers of the Early Church, lecturer extraordinaire who asks the most delightful "pedestrian-level" questions of his audience (his term) also wrote a blurb, if I recall correctly, for *That All Shall Be Saved*.

Hearing you speak so glowingly of him made my heart burn similar to what I'm told the Apostles' burned when seeing the Resurrected Christ opening Scripture to them and breaking Bread en route to Emmaeus.

If there is any possible chance that you might host a 1-3 hour public conversation with him, I'm more than certain it would bring great enlightenment to the intellects of many people.

And that's my bold five-dollar-and-fifty cent decree.

Thanks for posting! Please share the interview when you get back together on Romans 5. Of course, Australian accents are about as dulcet as Brooklyn accents, so that made it interesting as well!
