To a conversation on the most important of things

Joy Clarkson interviewed me recently for The Plough on the most significant topic possible and the one that bears most directly on the salvation of America’s soul. Well, one of them. There are of course the equally urgent and even more spiritually poignant issues of dogs, otters, and Jazz. Here, however, the topic is baseball and the conversation follows upon my recent article in the journal.

Though I was a lowly Braves fan in the 70’s, one of my earliest prized possessions was a Frank Robinson baseball card.
Hart makes baseball bear an improbable metaphysical weight—and somehow it holds. Memory and possibility, discipline and freedom, failure and excellence, the finite opening toward the infinite: all are there between the foul lines. Perhaps Heidegger simply needed better seats.
