In the second week of November I shall begin a series of four short articles on the prospect of a “science of mind” or “science of consciousness,” and specifically on the seemingly insuperable obstacles to such a project created by the dominant models of the theoretical and empirical sciences as we now know them. I will also at some point, either midway through that series or at its end, try to produce a “Books for a Very Long Journey” column overflowing with all sorts of exotic, pretentious, and recherché suggestions for Christmas presents.
